There is no direct link between Trenton and how it led to the development of modern medicine. However, it could be linked to the development of evidence-based medicine. Cotton’s theory was developed without any research and was practiced on patients. Nowadays any treatment has to go through a long process of scientific investigation and clinical trials. The mechanism of the treatment has to be investigated, the safety, the side effects, toxicology…etc. Treatments are often highly regulated and monitored.

- Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) - examines the thoughts and behaviours of an individual; it is used to treat depression, anxiety and psychotic disorders.
- Antidepressant medication – which work by enhancing or increasing the concentrations of neurotransmitters at the neuronal synapse in the brain. Therefore the synapse and mood will be enhanced. Those types of drugs are used to treat depression, phobias, panic disorders...etc. An example of those types of drugs is Fluoxetine, (Prozac®).
- Antiepileptic medications – Those types of medication work by suppressing the excess and rapid firing of neurons, and therefore reduce seizures. An example of those types of drugs is Carbamazepine, (Tegretol ®).
